Travis Tritt - No More Looking Over My Shoulder

In the music world, loud usually means turning up the volume. For Travis Tritt, it can also mean speaking loud emotionally. To potray your strongest feelings in their rawest, most intense form. Then, again, it can mean cranking that old volume knob up until it hurts. Both formats have been explored to the limit by Tritt and he proudly continues that syle with his latest (and 8th) album for Warner Brothers, No More Looking Over My Shoulder.

Originally scheduled to record the album in November of 1997, a series of events caused the recording to be pushed back until June of this year. Travis had several concert commitments that needed to be honored before recording could begin. Then his wife gave birth to their daughter and Travis cut back on touring so he could spend some time at home with them. In the spring of this year, he traveled to Spain to film Outlaw Justice with
Willie Nelson and Kris Kristofferson. It's his third CBS-TV Movie of the Week. He also starred in an episode of Tales From The Crypt on HBO plus guest spots in the movies The Cowboy Way, Fire Down Below and Blues Brothers 2000.

"We had a blast," says Travis. "The movie (Outlaw Justice) was shot in the same locations where the old Clint Eastwood movies were done, like Fistfull Of Dollars, For A Few Dollars More and The Good, The Bad & The Ugly. All those old Sergio Leone films. Kris and Willie are two of my favorite people. I enjoy them not only for all they've given to me musically
but also for what they are as actors."

The first single and video from the new album is for If I Lost You.  The video was shot on Lake Travis in Austin and continues the story of disabled Vietnam Vet Mac Singleton. The first video was for Anymore and it introduced the character. Tell Me I Was Dreaming was part two of the trilogy which dealt with Mac and his pregnant wife. After an accident, his wife dies but the baby (a girl named Annie) is saved. If I Lost You will continue the story, concentrating on the relationship between Mac and his daughter Annie.   On his previous album, The Restless Kind, Travis went back to his country roots and did as traditional a country album as he could ever make.  Always known for his rough and rowdy ways, he felt the need to prove to Nashville that he was a country artist first and foremost. On the new album, it's business as usual. The album certainly contains some strong country hits but also contains several of the southern rock flavors that Travis does so well.

Taking a look at the new album, this early observation comes to mind. There's not one weak song on it. Opening with the title cut, which was written by country artist Michael Peterson. Travis loved the powerful message the song provided. Rough Around The Edges was suggested by pal Marty Stuart. Both he and Travis agree that the song fits Tritt to a "T". It's an uptempo rocker that explains to the world that 'Ol Travis has never been known as being politically correct. The movie A Time To Kill inspired this tune, written by Travis and friend Bruce Ray Brown. The scene where Matthew McConaughey admires Sandra Bullock. As she walks away, he turns to a friend and says, "You've gotta love the Lord for making girls like that."

For You is another tender ballad along the lines of Drift Off To Dream and Help Me Hold On. Same goes for I'm All The Man, a song Travis wrote explaining his relationship with his new wife Theresa. Travis covers two songs on this album. The Bruce Springsteen hit Tougher Than The Rest and the Jude Cole tune Start The Car. Both are performed very close to their original versions. Mission Of Love looks at infidelity through the eyes of a
man. He's hom taking care of the baby while his wife is out running around.  "We had a writing session at my house one day, just before I started recording the album," remembers Travis. "I had this guitar riff that I couldn't get out of my head. It came from my influences of the Marshall Tucker Band, Allman Brothers and Lynyrd Skynyrd. I wanted to write a song about a guy who spends his entire life chasing something. And the whole time he's chasing it, it was right there in front of him and he never realized it. Now that he's found it, he's happier than he's found it, he's happier than he's ever been before. So, I wrote, "The Road To You," and put it as the last cut on the album. It kinda sums up my life and makes the journey on this album complete. It's a good ending."
